Counting in Kindergarten
Counting Goals
Learning to count well is an essential skill in kindergarten. This may sound like a simple task, but it is more complex than it seems. We will have three main goals that we work toward while learning to count in kindergarten this year.
Learning to count well is an essential skill in kindergarten. This may sound like a simple task, but it is more complex than it seems. We will have three main goals that we work toward while learning to count in kindergarten this year.
- Know number names and the count sequence. This means that students will learn how to count aloud in Spanish from 1 to 100 by ones and by tens. Students will also learn to start counting at any given number and continue on without having to start at 1.
- Count to tell the number of objects. This can be a tricky skill to master! Does your child touch each item as she counts? Does he only say one number per object? Does she understand that the last number she says tells how many items there are in the set? Does he understand that how many objects there would be in the set if there were one more or one fewer?
- Compare numbers. Students will practice counting two different groups of objects and telling which group has more and which group has fewer items. Kindergarteners will also learn to look at two different numbers (like 7 and 4) and tell which number is bigger and which number is smaller.
